Mrs Wray will be teaching each Monday and Mrs Blackburn Tuesday to Friday. Mrs Connor will work with us on Monday afternoon, Wednesday and Thursday mornings, to support Maths and English lessons, as well as do some booster work and pastoral interventions. Mrs Connor will also cover teacher planning sessions on a Wednesday afternoon and Mrs Barlow will cover Mrs Blackburn’s Leadership Time on a Friday afternoon. We will all work very closely together to ensure the consistency of teaching and learning throughout the year.

Please can I encourage you to sign up for/install Purple Mash at home. Your child can access Purple Mash from home on a laptop, desktop or a tablet. Purple Mash is a safe environment that does not require any downloading or allow interaction with people online and children cannot make any financial transactions. We will be encouraging the children to continue their learning at home and Purple Mash is a great resource for this. Your child will be taught how to use Purple Mash in school and will be able to use it without supervision, but you may want to take a few minutes to explore it yourself so that you can help them with their work. Spellings will be given out on each Monday and will be tested the following Monday. Spelling lists will consist of words from the statutory Year 5 word list and three to four different spelling patterns. These spelling patterns will be repeated throughout the year. The spelling scheme is challenging at times but it does build on previously learnt words and patterns. To help with understanding, we have put each spelling into context with an example sentence on the back of the spelling sheet. It is important that these spelling patterns are learnt to support the work we will be completing in class and to meet the expected learning objectives for the year group.
Times tables knowledge will support the work we do in Mathematics as we will be completing mental calculations and formal written method calculations for multiplication and division problems as well as applying these skills to fractions, decimals and percentages. Therefore, it is crucial that they can recall the facts quickly without having to count up and down. To retain facts and increase speed, we will complete a weekly times table assessment. This will be an unseen test, which will change tables each week, and consist of twenty four questions, twelve multiplications and twelve divisions. The times table to be tested will be given out on Monday and will be assessed each Monday.
Reading is also extremely important. We will be expecting the children to read daily, and to complete a home reading diary activity weekly. The diaries will be given out next week and task instructions will be stuck inside the book. Please, ensure that sufficient time is devoted to these reading activities and that it is quality time. The children are not too old to be heard read or to be read to, this is still a valuable exercise and will allow you to discuss the text with them, supporting the development of their higher order reading skills.
We will have dedicated reading sessions each week. Whilst there are books available in the class library, the children may bring in a book from home or the local library which they can read, at this time.
P.E. - Spring Term
PE will continue to be on a Wednesday and Thursday. We will cover football and circuit training.
In Key Stage 2, children are allowed to bring in their own fruit or vegetable snack to eat at playtime. Snacks should be fruit or vegetables – this does not include snacks containing fruit e.g. cereal bars. School does not provide milk but this can be purchased each half-term via arrangement with the school office.
